John Francis Speight (1804-1860) of Edgecombe County, NC, married Emma Lewis in 1840. A Methodist minister and itinerant preacher, Speight traveled extensively throughout central and eastern North Carolina. In 1859 he became president of the North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church. Speight also helped organize Jamestown Female College.
